The centreBuilt in the heart of the city in the early twentieth century, the building is now very much a part of Toulon life. It was the seat of the sub-prefecture, and then became the headquarters of the Presidency of the Var General Council. Since 1999, the building has housed the General Council's art centre, the Hôtel des Arts. Located in the centre of Toulon, the centre offers 400 sq. metres of exhibition space divided into nine galleries on two floors. Each year, the Hôtel des Arts presents up to five exhibitions that explore areas such as painting, sculpture, photography, video art and installations. In addition to these exhibitions, the Hôtel des Arts offers art-related activities to the general public, including workshops, guided tours, specially-designed visits, encounters, and so on. It also publishes exhibition catalogues, provides a collection of artworks and a resource centre, and initiates and participates in cultural events (Heritage Days, Museum Night, Telerama Museum Weekend, etc.). Finally, each year it presents two "Beyond the Walls" exhibitions in the département of Var. |
